Sunset in Kincardine
Went to visit friends in the lovely town of Kincardine. This part of the world is said to have some of the nicest sunsets in the world. While taking a moment out behind SugarShack I snapped this. It even had a soundtrack to accompany it - a piper was playing atop the light tower.
Kifaru E&E
Among all the other stuff I have from Kifaru is one of their E&E packs. Meant as a detachable day pack, or grab and go pack, or escape & evasion pack (hence the name), whatever you want to call it. Great little pack, about a 1000 cubic inches, and built with the usual Kifaru attention to detail.
The pack comes with very simple 2" straps. If desired, they can be replaced with beefier X-Ray straps. If you were to regularly carry fairly substantial loads in it, I could see that proper padded straps would be nicer than straight forward 2" webbing. I’d rather keep the weight and the bulk down myself.
I opted to replace the stock sternum strap with a Whistle Loc.
The side of the pack is only two PALS channels wide, which I find a bit limiting. I always wanted to stick a first aid pouch on there, but most of the ones I have are three channels wide.
The top of the pack with a carry handle, covered zipper and of course, the zipper pulls replaced with paracord sinnets.
A slot pocket sits along the back, which can be used for storing maps or a hydration bladder. It can also be used for storing away the straps, which can be disconnected at the bottom.
The bottom with three (optional) drain holes.
On the bottoms of the straps I added some velcro to secure ends when rolled up.
Here it is with Maxpedition Cocoons mounted on the sides.
Here it is with a Maxpedition M-1 mounted to the side.
Here it is with Tactical Tailor 1V Accessory Pouches mounted on the sides.
And here with the same pouches mounted on the front.
And here, again with the same TT1V’s on the front, but this time mounted atop an Emdom Large Utilishingle.
I had an umbrella with me a few days ago, but needed to have my hands free at one point. Looking for a way to lash it on, it dawned on me that crossing over the side straps made for a pretty good umbrella carrier. One of those “duh! How obvious moments.” but it might work for trekking poles as well.
The version that I have is the G1. In the interim, the G2 has come out, which has a zipper that goes all the way around the sides, so that it is now a full clam shell opening pack, more PALS along the top and bottom, more organizational options inside, and, most importantly a Velcro area on the front to stick cool guy patches.

Federal Building Sculptures
The abandoned Federal Building on Main Street in Hamilton has a nice series of sculptures mounted to the wall by the main entrance. Done by Elizabeth Bradford Holbrook, likely this city’s most notable sculptor, they have a very distinct mid 20th century feel to them. One side of the door shows human endeavour, and the other side shows wildlife. I have them shown bottom to top. The top ones have more pronounced verdigris, likely from bronze flag pole mounts that have since been removed. I have heard a variety of things that are supposed to happen with the building, but I really hope these are preserved somehow, somewhere.
S.o.t.D. – Madagascar (Push Remix) – Art of Trance
I tend to regard most “trance” as either a gino fondue fest, or in the case of psy-trance, bombastic and well past its expiry date. In the latter genre, and also a bit in the former genre, there are still some gems from its early days that I like. This one is a bunch of years old, but I like it for some reason. It’s appeared on a bunch of cycling/running tapes I’ve put together over the years.

LowePro TerraClime 10
Nothing that extraordinary, but still a neat little pouch. It belongs to a friend, but since I’m really into the design and construction of pouches, I had to check it out and take some photos.
The exterior dimensions are 10 cm (3.9") Wide X 4.2 cm (1.7") Deep X 8.5 cm (3.3") High.
Belt loop on the back.

It’s a pretty cool design in and of itself, but the big selling point is that it’s “eco-friendly”. The fabric is 100% post-consumer Cyclepet. This model of their Terraclime line uses 21⁄2 recycled 16 oz. PET bottles. Not sure how the material measures up to Cordura, but it’s touted as being water and abrasion resistant. Seems quite similar anyway.
I dig the proprietary closure buckle that LowePro came up with. It’s quiet and very low profile, securely closes the flap and holds on until you want to disengage it. And it’s also made from recycled plastic.
The two short grey lines in the corners are for clipping an optional shoulder strap into. Can’t show it since my friend can’t find where it is.
Memory card pocket.
Slightly easier to see it when the pouch is turned inside out.
The interior dimensions are 9.5 cm (3.7") Wide X 4 cm (1.6") Deep X 8 cm (3.1") High.
If all the reused plastic bottle/material doesn’t do enough to give you the warm and fuzzies, a portion of the proceeds from each pouch goes to Polar Bears International to help in efforts to save polar bear habitats from the impact of climate change.
Perfect for a tiny camera like a Nikon CoolPix or a Samsung ES70 .

S.o.t.D. – Starlight – Model 500
I really like the related video feature in YouTube. I’ll often load up a queue with a bunch of tracks that I’m unfamiliar with, and let it play while I work. Some tracks I don’t care for, and sometimes I discover a gem.
I had this track on a mixed tape many years ago and totally loved it. Never knew what it was called though. Thrilled to hear that familiar bass line again. Turns out that it’s Juan Atkins. Simple, almost absurdly so, but couldn’t get enough of it. Most people won’t really get this, decry it as monotonous, but then they undoubtedly don’t grasp that a lot of techno records really aren’t, and aren’t meant to be, finished songs. They’re merely DJ tools, a groove that can be built on. Even as a possibly raw track, I think this is really evocative despite its relative simplicity.

S.o.t.D. – Intro Maze/Strawberry Maze – Hardfloor
(I put the two together because that’s how they flow on the album, and that’s how I always listen to them.)
This is what I listen to when I’m tabbing to get somewhere in a hurry. Never fails to motivate me.
Bibliophilia: The Adventurist: My Life in Dangerous Places – Robert Young Pelton
This one precedes the books where he buddies up to real deal BTDT guys in the airport lounge, milks them for their stories and then passes them off as his own. This is the charge levelled against him by some folks I know, who really dislike him. As one wag puts it, “I’d call him a bullshit artist, but that would be insulting to bullshit artists.” Still, reading this helps keep that “pack it all in and go wandering” flame alive.
