Nations Fresh Food is an Ontario based Asian super market, with a lot of Western fare as well. It’s a bit on the weird side (for a really long time their web site was an image of their weekly flyer - no contact info, job applications, info about products, etc. – it now looks to be considerably improved.), they only take Canadian cash and debit cards, they tell you you can’t separate bunches of bananas (ha!), their closing time seems to be whatever the staff feels like, I’ve had to chew out a manager on more than one occasion about their bait and switch pricing tactics, etc., etc.)
But the wacky packaging! Oh the packaging. Sometimes delightfully charming, and other times just “WTF?” bizarre.
Aahhh....just because my Monday morning needed a WTF?!
The “Mo! Mo! Moooo” part is also....unsettling.
An individual packet of the sugar and palm oil filled cookies. Where there is even less evidence of it being an udder.
“We have bought NTD 10,000,000 product liability insurance for this product.”
They look like something you’d find behind under your fridge. They’re like corn puffs, but with a choco flavour coating. Ate two. No need to eat any more.
I have no idea what these are. (Like much of the stuff Nations sells, there is no English or French labelling. How they can legally get away with that is beyond me.) Hot rocks you put in your bath water, spicy oils that make you sweat more to get out the impurities? Who knows.
But the packaging is great.
Spicy candies, nasal spray that clears up your sinuses? Who knows.
Rose scented bath oil, candy that leads to demonic possession? Who knows.
Mmm....spicy...
That’s what she said to me last night.
Nope. No desire to try it. Might get it just for the can to make a stove out of though.
It’s pretty clever. Knife and fork. That and a spork and you can conquer the world.
But I fear that a $1.49 for this will lead to disappointment. Call it a hunch.
But even if the product sucks, just that description alone will give you years of joy.
I don’t know about you, but preventing skiding is also a pre-occupation of mine.
The product itself just isn’t appealing, but the packaging is lovely.
Be my soul mate. Be my waffle mate.
Okay then.
“Love of Office Lady”. I think I saw that one. Busty strumpet, tight skirt, low cut blouse, hunky guy, and oh...the things she was willing to do to get that promotion.
It’s a pretty great porn star name. Cookie Rolls.
Show your children love the only true way. With soft cookies. Not hard biscuits, you cruel monster! Soft cookies!
I’ve been to some parties where mushrooms were consumed, and things got weird, but not Donald Trump in drag dancing with a Green Bay Packers fan weird.
Even anthropomorphized gourds Yvette Bombardier the brothel keeper and Buster McGillicuddy the sheriff aren’t enough to make me want to buy this package of pickled vegetable snacks.
Oh look! It’s Penishead, the Unicorn Boy, that loveable mascot drooling into his hybrid afro/neck beard, enticing you to buy some spicy pig intestine snacks.
Kirin Milk Tea “the Pungency”. With the characters from Frozen on it. I had to do a double take to make sure I was seeing this correctly. Yes. “Pungency”. In relation to a drink. Using Disney characters on the label. “Pungency” is a word used to describe the guy whose BO hits you from 5 paces away. Not a drink. I will not be purchasing this.
I love orange too. (So you don’t have to strain your eyes to read the text, just scroll through to the next picture for a close-up of the whimsical cautionary text.)
Yes. You’re reading that right. A “Tultipurp Ose Tool.”

I don’t even think the Chinese made sense before they translated it.
You know how pandas are all cute and cuddly? This one is like the main character in some totally demented panda horror movie.
The freaky thing to me is that they all look like faces that’ve been peeled off of a carcass.
Yay! Mommy! Buy me this sugary drink because it has a cute monkey and his buddies from a TV show driving a car!
This one caught my eye, because I thought it was quite an elegant package.
Isn’t everyone’s reaction to dried tofu a put up your dukes / fist pump?
Look, it’s dried tofu guy again, in some sort of infinity mirror like thingy. Himself, pointing to himself, pointing to himself, pointing to himself... These are ... dried fish snacks I think?
Did this influence Designer’s Republic or were they influenced by Designer’s Republic? Things that make you guy “Hmmmmhhhh.....”
They may also make you go “Mmmmmm....” I don’t know. I didn’t buy them.
The look on that kids face is either “I’m expected to grow noodles?” or “You expect me to eat that?”
I just like this packaging. I’m not even going to comment on the “Creamy Flavoured Melon Seeds”.
I’m not sure. Do you win a prize or are these just dynamite candies? And is the estate of Roy Lichtenstein going to sue?
These just don’t appeal to me.
Again, no idea what this is, but I like the packaging.
Just like this packaging.
Mmmm.....Apparently the Chinese have managed to raise peanuts with no fat and lots of sugar.
I’m only an occasional imbiber of alcohol. The end of the year and rum and eggnog seem to go well together for me though. Bought this bottle, I’m not too chagrined to say, largely on the basis of the label. I’ve tried to find out who the illustrator is, but no luck. I know the agency is Moxie Sozo, but they don’t say who the illustrator is. One of those things ad agencies do that annoys the piss out of me.
I visited my friend Ryan again recently, and while I took a photo from his balcony once before, couldn’t resist another. What the heck. Different time of day, different lighting, it’s all good.
Not so much a sign, as a sticker on a sign box. The sign itself, (almost certainly not by BJ Signs - it’s likely been replaced many times over the years as business’ changed.) was not at all interesting. But I loved the character of this 30 year old sticker on the side.
Roxann’s troubled tummy Made her feel so crummy The days of pain were lots in number It interrupted many nights of slumber Surely this kind of torture in the belly Was a sign of something unhealthy The ache in her bowels Led to gasps and howls The spasms kept getting worse The agony made her utter curses (Yes! This foul mouthed individual Swore even more than her usual!) This was beginning to bore her Not a fan of this kind of horror To Satan she did pray Make this hell go away One bad day she said damn it all And off she went to the hospital “Doctor, this misery keeps getting badder.” “Why Ms. Tarajos, it’s your gall bladder.” Her wincing Was convincing She didn’t even have to explain Was given a script for the pain He scheduled an operation To remove this aggravation I hope that after the extrication Her torture comes to an end She has an easy recuperation And is quickly on the mend
Dance With The Devil – Cozy Powell The song I featured yesterday, I remember it came on the radio as a friend and I drove along years ago, and he said that the drum part was a total rip off of Dance With The Devil. I was only somewhat familiar with Cozy Powell at that time. Checked it out, and sure enough, the similarity is obvious.
Night Flight to Venus – Boney M I was in the gorcery store today and Rasputin was playing. While that song and Boney M in general is cheesier than a dairy consortium, I recall hearing this back in 78. My friends dad had the record. I would have been 11. Loved the drumming in this.
Take Five – Sachal Jazz Ensemble & Wynton Marsalis Lahore, Pakistan’s Sachal Jazz Ensemble are joined by Wynton Marsalis, that Dave Brubeck called the “most interesting” version of Take Five he had ever heard.
Swamp Thing – The Chameleons The Chameleons, post-punk band from Middleton, England, are not to be confused with electronica act, The Chameleon, featuring England’s Tom Middleton.
That amusing moment when you browse through Pinterest and it presents you with one of your own bag designs as something you might find interesting.
After being pleasantly surprised to see that the Pinterest algorithm told me I’d find myself interesting, I decided to see what else was on there about me. All sorts of stuff. (Can’t believe I’d never typed my name in to the search bar there before. Duh. {I’m always amazed at the number of times I’ve found photos from my blog when I’ve run Google image searches for things.})
Ha! Cool and humbling to see that other people dig what I do and want to bookmark it for inspiration and share it with others.
Rain – Breakage I’ve featured Breakage on here before, and it tends to lean towards the heavier end of D&B. But this is a nicely chilled track, with enough bass to make me happy. I think the vocal is a sample of Robert Plant?
This is kind of a slow 10 minute documentary, yet I found it utterly engrossing. Anyone with a connection to film developing and photography, and history, will appreciate this. Interesting exposition on the magic of film photography, the art of developing, wanting to preserve locked away history, the mystery of who even took these exquisite photographs. Fascinating they really are. Both in terms of subject and composition. Clearly this was someone with a good eye, some talent and a good camera. I was surprisingly absorbed by it.
Here Comes Trouble – Chronixx The lyrical content and the video are pretty silly, but the song is insanely catchy, and hopefully a nice antidote to this season.
Insine – Galaxy Gorgeous scenery to accompany gorgeous music. Or is it the other way around? Either way, Boris Blenn operating under the moniker Galaxy, produces some lovely ambient.
Lo – Nico What the heck. Let’s start the new year off with a bang. Or at least some ferocious drums and pummeling bass. Oh, when it really gets going around the 3 minute mark...
Garland Noose – Liar Yet another Romanian producer. Lots of totally creamy stuff coming out of that country lately. Feel like the beats are sampled from something I ought to recognize. Just can’t place it though. I think this may be one of my favourite tracks from 2016.
