A few months back I was watching the news and members of our perennial underdog football team, the Hamilton TigerCats were being interviewed. It made me wince. These guys are horrible public speakers.
I realize there is nothing quite as inane and pointless as the post-game interview. But when the complete lack of substance is overwhelmed by the non stop “y’knows”, and “y’knowud’m’sayins” it’s especially painful. About twice as many “y’knows” as there are seconds in the interview clip? Come on.
“Y’know we gotta build on a winning season, y’know, we gotta pull together as a team, y’knowud’m’sayin, we fought hard, y’know, we’re just going to take it one game at a time, y’know, we know what we gotta do, y’knowud’m’sayin, we just gotta go out there and do it, y’know, we’re going to get things turned around, y’knowud’m’sayin.”
These guys came up through a college system? Really? Every one of them peppers their speech with it. It sounds pathetic.
They (and to be honest, I think practically every other sports team out there) needs to add a public speaking coach to the coaching staff. Or find a member that is somewhat articulate and get him to give the interviews.
Y’knowud’m’sayin?
