In the annals of cover songs, I think this is one of ones that ends up totally transcending the original. The original was by Nine Inch Nails, and Johnny Cash took it and made it very much his own. Whereas Trent Reznor usually sounds whiny and mopey, Mr. Cash lends this song and its subject a level of depth and gravitas. The fact that this was one of the last things he put out made it even more poignant.
