Scale of Planets

Trying to wrap my little brain around things like distances in the universe or even just the size of planets, is usually a futile effort. Came across this a while back and thought it explained at least the latter befuddler in a fairly simple manner.

  1. It would be awesome to find an earth-class planet the size of Jupiter or Saturn. I remember reading "Lord Valentine's Castle" by Robert Silverberg and was intrigued by the description of the planet Majipoor. They said that our earth would fit in one of its oceans. That would ROCK.

  2. Yeah but even if we did, there is still the issue of getting there. And if we got there we might find beings even more warlike than us, who have done an even worse job of managing the resources of their planet than us, and who might not welcome us with open arms.

  3. True. I'm still worried that we sent Voyager off all those years ago with our address and menu items of everything our planet has to offer. I don't know if anything good can come of that or not.

  4. It's nice to think there are planets out there that are either uninhabited, which would be great. Or inhabited with friendly species. But if the history of this planet is any indication, we'll either wipe out what we find, or what we find will take umbrage at our dropping in and wipe us out.

Sorry to be a bummer and be all existentialist.
