I think I may have featured a remix or a cover of a song I’ve posted previously, but I don’t think I’ve featured the same song twice before. But when I saw that someone had done a re-take on the original video for Dayvan Cowboy and replaced the footage of Col. Joseph Kittinger and his record setting jump, with Felix Baumgartner’s record breaking jump, I knew I had to post it. And besides - it’s Boards of Canada.

Now Baumgartner is a stud and all, and what he did is impressive as all get out, and I’m glad the technology has improved to the point that it was filmed a lot better than the 1960 jump. But for my money, Kittinger and his jump will always be the stuff of legend.

One Got Fat

I’ve previously posted Boards of Canada’s surreal, but strangely fitting video for “Everything You Do Is A Balloon”. It culls imagery from the weird 1963 bicycle safety film, “One Got Fat.”

Decided that I wanted to see the actual film itself, narration, explanations of what the hell is going on and all. Yup, it’s wacky all right. While the core message is undeniable, it’s unfathomable that something like it would be produced today.

In a campaign as obtuse as their music, BoC teased their fans for the last week with cryptic clues, leading up to an announcement of an upcoming album, to be released June 10/11. Most people will undoubtedly be left scratching their head wondering “What the hell is this? It’s weird. It’s like, some sounds and some noise, and, and, they’ll never win if they go on American Idol.” But I am very stoked!

Sometimes the visuals that accompany a track on YouTube are not worth bothering with at all - ie. the label on the record. But occasionally you get a gem like this. I’ve only ever witnessed Aurora Borealis once, and fairly mild at that. I can only imagine what a trip it must be to see them as strong as this. Must go further north. Go north middle aged man!

Which features the awe inspiring footage of Joseph Kittinger’s record setting 1960 jump from 31.3 kilometers up. He fell for 4 minutes and 36 seconds reaching a maximum speed of 988 km/h (!!!!) before opening his parachute at 5,500 m. He set records (that stand to this day, and will quite possibly never be broken) for highest balloon ascent, highest parachute jump, longest drogue-fall (4 min), and fastest speed by a human through the atmosphere. If there is a definition for awesome, that’s it.

And the best part is that a year before he made a jump from 23.2 km where an equipment malfunction caused him to lose consciousness, but he was saved by the automatic parachute (he went into a flat spin at a rotational velocity of 120 rpm; the g-force at his extremities was calculated to be over 22 times that of gravity, setting another record). He recovered and was raring to go back at it.

If that doesn’t qualify as being a stud, I don’t know what does. Yeah, I’m doing quite possibly one of the most dangerous things imaginable, no one has ever done this before, I almost get killed doing it, and I can’t wait to get back at it. Wow. But then again, for that view, I think I can understand the motivation.

Oh and the reason for those tests was to see if astronauts could bail out of their capsules if need be.
