Several of his last ones have been spotty, but this one is a bit of a return to form.

And amazingly topical, given developments in the Ukraine since his untimely death. Although the authors managed to defuse this whole situation very neatly. Fiction is always so much easier than non-fiction to end on a high note.

I like these just as an evening or two of thoughtless fun, but I think at some point a cyber-drone-shark was jumped. The parts where they manage to get a badly wounded team of SEALS out of Hong Kong with police and gangsters on their tail, and then manage to stage an ambush in the middle of China and slip away, and rescue a shot down pilot from an angry mob in the middle of China and slip away, just came across as ridiculous. These are certainly not the tight as a drum books he was writing a quarter century ago. They just feel like an effort to advertise the “Tom Clancy” brand.

Locked On – Tom Clancy (with Mark Greaney)

Thrilling page turner. Nothing deep about it, but since it takes me about an evening or two to rip through one of these, it’s a fun bit of escapism. But I think it’s safe to say Tom Clancy has little to do with this. Some plot suggestions maybe. His books started to go downhill at some point, and I think the people behind the gravy train need to keep it rolling, so enlisted ghost writers.

Not sure that he is as good as he was. I think he really has become a franchise. I think his co-writers pretty much do it all now. I enjoyed it, but I’m not sure it’s the kind of tight, well researched thriller he became known for.

The follow-up to Teeth of the Tiger. Great characters and plot twists and action. Come on, it’s Clancy.
